ACCESSIBILITY STATEMENT
Abbot House is a Grade A listed medieval house dating back over 500 years. Every attempt has been made to make access as easy as possible for customers with mobility or learning difficulties within the restrictions of the house.
Please note that access to the 1st and 2nd floors can only be accessed via narrow spiral staircases.
The ground floor of Abbot House is split across two levels with 5 stairs joining both levels internally. Both levels have their own entrance doors which are accessed through flat pavements
Coffee Shop/ Bookshop can be accessed through double French doors to the rear of the property within the walled garden. This is general entrance for all customers. The pavement leading to the property is wide and flat but on a small incline. There is generally one side of the doors open but if the customers requires both doors to be opened then this can be supported by our staff.
Gift Shop – Access to the shop can be made directly through the door on the main street outside the building which has a large flat paved entrance way.
The internal stairs can be avoided by heading back out the main street and accessing through the rear garden entrance and vice versa.
All internal doors and passageways are wide enough for most wheelchairs and motility scooters.
There is signage, including picture signs for any customers with learning difficulties.
There is a dedicated disabled toilet in our general customer block which is located in our external outbuilding within our walled garden. This is accessible via a wide flat ramp.
Assistance dogs are welcome and water bowls are provided in both the garden and outside the gift shop.
PARKING
There are limited 1hr parking bays directly in front of Abbot House, together with 3 Disabled Parking spaces. Longer stay parking is recommended in one of the many car parks around the town centre including St. Margaret Street, Walmer Drive and the Glen Bridge.
